Every day we are faced with decisions. For one, when it comes to dinner, where to? The new pasta place or the sushi bar or the place that pushes the best Taco Tuesdays? All are favorable unless Yelp suggests otherwise. Then there are clear-cut life decisions that don’t need pondering. Comb through the Bible and we will find decisions etched in stone. Should I take (or borrow) that notepad from work? "Thou shalt not steal" (Ex. 20:15). Numerous examples in God’s beloved word reveal the obvious when it comes to decision-making. Yet, some Biblical choices are not quite so black and white.

For example, the company J.D. works for is going through a huge layoff. J.D. is married with a spouse and two kids. Now that J.D. is on a job search, he can find an opportunity that will make for a better life. He gets two offers. One comes with an attractive salary, lots of travel, perks, bonuses and great health benefits. The other one is ten miles from home, modest salary, very little travel and basic health benefits. Well, it’s obvious which one J.D. will take because isn’t the goal to have a more comfortable life? To go bigger, better and bolder?

A long while back, I was in the same predicament and made a bad decision based on a perk-filled offer with lots of travel. I left an incredible job for a job that promised me the world. And although the job did come with travel, it also came with a toxic work environment. It was the worst professional decision I’ve ever made. This faulty decision came at a cost with huge regrets. My lesson from this was, when God gifts us with anything, that’s His best for us. We want what we want but God gives us what we need. To simplify, “having enough is more than enough.”

Getting back to J.D. If the Bible doesn’t spell it out in black and white, how does J.D. know which job to take? If he chose the more attractive offer, he could earn a sizable income while seeing the world. If he chose the one closer to home, he could spend quality time with his family. I know which one I would choose. When it comes to making a life decision, the best choice is the one that will bring us closer to God. “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” (2 Corinth. 9:8).
